  3. MAYNARD, Mass.--June 25, 1991--Today, Digital Equipment Corporation
  4. took a major step forward in the continuing evolution of its Network
  5. Application Support (NAS)-based COHESION Software Development
  6. Environment by announcing the availability of CDD/Repository V5 and
  7. CDD/Administrator.  The company also announced additional CASE products
  8. on both VMS and ULTRIX systems which add levels of functionality and
  9. integration.
  10.  
  11. In addition, Digital announced its Application Control Architecture
  12. (ACA) Services which provides a key application integration capability
  13. for NAS (see separate release).
  14.  
  15. Together, these products provide a core environment on Digital's VMS
  16. and ULTRIX platforms for the development and deployment of software for
  17. multiple vendors' systems, thus making COHESION Digital's Open
  18. Advantage for software development.  The systems include Digital's VMS
  19. and ULTRIX systems, IBM mainframes, Cray, Apple Macintosh, UNIX, OS/2,
  20. and MS-DOS.

  49. "CDD/Repository, as a major component of NAS is an essential part of
  50. our strategy to make COHESION function in the distributed, multi-vendor
  51. environment.  It's a significant open technology deliverable of our
  52. Open Advantage strategy, useful for the re-engineering and maintenance
  53. of existing systems as well as newly-developed applications.  That's
  54. the real world in which our customers and software vendors must
  55. operate," said Marion Dancy, group manager of Digital's Application
  56. Development Systems Group.  "If software is the infrastructure of the
  57. 90s, then developing critical applications in 90 days when your rival
  58. takes 180 days--or more--is the real competitive advantage CASE
  59. technology can provide business today."

  62. to our customer's needs for a fully-integrated repository and CASE
  63. tools for development across multiple platforms," said David L.  Stone,
  64. Digital's vice-president of Software Products.  "This is yet another
  65. step in our continuing commitment to provide our industry-leading
  66. software-development infrastructure--based on standards--to span the
  67. enterprise."

  69. CDD/REPOSITORY
  70.  
  71. CDD/Repository V5 delivers repository services as part of Digital's NAS
  72. and allows the tool integration necessary for software developers to
  73. succeed in the 90s.  In announcing the availability of CDD/Repository,
  74. Digital expanded both the scope and function of CDD/Plus V4 on VMS,
  75. which currently has approximately 40,000 installed sites.

  77. CDD/Repository V5 may be ordered today for delivery on VMS systems in
  78. November, 1991 and on ULTRIX systems in February of 1992.  Prices range
  79. from under $1,000 to approximately $48,000 depending on operating
  80. system and processor.

  82. REPOSITORY INFORMATION MODEL (RIM)
  83.  
  84. Digital also announced availability of its Repository Information Model
  85. (RIM) which provides a road map of information in the repository by
  86. describing the objects in the repository and the relationships among
  87. those objects.  This road map will help developers take full advantage
  88. of CDD/Repository.
  89.  
  90. Digital's RIM is both open and extensible.  Because it is extensible,
  91. software vendors and end-use developers can add value by defining
  92. additional objects beyond those defined within the formal document.
  93.  
  94. A number of software vendors have committed to using CDD/Repository
  95. with their products and are currently involved in the RIM development
  96. process.  These include Andersen Consulting, Cognos, Inc., Hypersoft
  97. Corporation, Information Builders, Inc., and SmartStar Corporation.

  99. The CDD/Repository V5 Information Model will be published as part of
  100. the product documentation in November, 1991 and will be republished as
  101. it evolves over time.
  102.  
  103. ADDITIONAL PRODUCTS ANNOUNCED
  104.  
  105. CDD/Administrator--Provides a graphical user interface for repository
  106. administrators.  CDD/Administrator may be ordered today for delivery on
  107. both VMS and ULTRIX systems in January and February of 1992
  108. respectively.  The user/activity license for CDD/Administrator is
  109. $6,642.
  110.  
  111. DECset V11--The next generation of the popular VAXset CASE toolset for
  112. both VMS and ULTRIX systems, DECset V11 incorporates ACA Services for
  113. intertool communication and integration.  DECset V11 can be ordered
  114. today for delivery in November, 1991.  Prices for DECset V11 start at
  115. $5,070.

  117. DECplan--Provides project and time management for individuals and
  118. workgroups across the enterprise.  This first version of DECplan can be
  119. ordered now for delivery in September, 1991 for both VMS and ULTRIX
  120. systems.  DECplan for VAX/VMS systems is $19,807 and $9,003 for
  121. RISC/ULTRIX systems.

  123. APPLICATION CONTROL ARCHITECTURE (ACA) Services--Is used by COHESION as
  124. an enabling technology to provide improved integration of software
  125. development tools and applications.  For the first time, developers and
  126. systems integrators can easily locate, launch, and link independent,
  127. isolated applications in a networked, mixed-system environment.
  128. Digital also announced that ACA Services can be purchased separately as
  129. a software development environment for a wide variety of applications,
  130. such as manufacturing and office automation (see separate release).

  132. INDUSTRY SPECIFIC COHESION SOLUTIONS
  133.  
  134. The best technology in the world is not meaningful if it cannot provide
  135. useful solutions.  Digital's open business practices mean Digital can
  136. work with independent vendors to deliver solution packages which can
  137. help break the application backlog and address the issues of re-
  138. engineering and maintenance as well as distributed, multi-vendor
  139. computing environments.

  141. A variety of packaged solutions defined in today's announcement.
  142. Pricing of each individual package is quoted by specific
  143. combination/configuration.  They are:

  145. .  COHESION for Rapid Development--Provides a way to build  database
  146. applications featuring a rapid prototyping  approach.

  148. .  COHESION for TP Development--Provides productivity for  building
  149. large scale, distributable applications using the  services of DECtp.

  151. .  COHESION for IBM Cross-Development--Gives users the  ability to
  152. develop software on a Digital platform in order  to target IBM
  153. platforms, including CICS and DB2.

  155. .  COHESION for Maintenance and Re-engineering--Addresses  bringing
  156. existing applications under control and advancing  to strategic re-
  157. engineering--for Digital applications  that may not have been initially
  158. built using COHESION.

  160. .  COHESION for IBM Maintenance and Re-engineering--Uses  Hypersoft's
  161. Application Browser to analyze existing  mainframe code and extract
  162. meaningful information into the  repository.  Uses DECmessageQ, a NAS
  163. interface, to link NAS  applications to existing IBM systems.

  165. .  COHESION ASD/SEE--As part of the COHESION initiative,  Digital has
  166. developed an Aerospace Defense Software  Engineering Environment
  167. (ASD/SEE) addressing the specific  needs of government agencies and the
  168. aerospace industry.

  170. .  COHESION for Telecommunications Service Creation--Working  with
  171. Telesoft, Digital provides the telecommunications  industry with a
  172. CCITT (Consultative Committee for  International Telephony and
  173. Telecommunications) conforming  approach to service creation that
  174. shortens time to market  for intelligent network services.

  176. OPEN BUSINESS PRACTICES: SOFTWARE VENDORS INTEGRATE WITH COHESION

  178. Several of the independent software vendors with marketing and/or sales
  179. relationships in support of Digital's COHESION environment also
  180. announced support of Digital's direction and committed to support
  181. CDD/Repository with their products (see separate releases for details).

  183. .  Andersen Consulting announced expanded commitment to  Digital's
  184. long-term strategic products and direction and  that FOUNDATION--
  185. INSTALL/1 for VAX/VMS will support  CDD/Repository V5.
  186.  
  187. .  Cognos, Incorporated--the PowerHouse product will support
  188. CDD/Repository and announced an ULTRIX based version of  that product.
  189.  
  190. .  Hypersoft Corporation--currently testing CDD/Repository  and the
  191. ATIS interface for a planned interface with  Application Browser and
  192. has recently signed a Complementary  Solutions House (CSH) agreement
  193. with Digital.
  194.  
  195. .  Information Builders, Inc.--is actively field testing
  196. CDD/Repository and the ATIS interface and plans to fully  support this
  197. key functionality with FOCUS.
  198.  
  199. .  Netron, Inc.--intends to expand NETRON/CAP to target the  ULTRIX
  200. operating system.
  201.  
  202. .  SmartStar Corporation announced extended development  directions
  203. based on Digital's CDD/Repository.
  204.  
  205. .  Software AG--the NATURAL 4th generation application  development
  206. environment will be integrated with Digital's  CDD/Repository.

  208. In addition, QSM Associates, Inc. has announced that independent
  209. analysis of development in a Digital COHESION environment has resulted
  210. in a 41% schedule compression and 62% cost reduction as compared with
  211. conventional methods.
  212.  
  213. WORLDWIDE STANDARDS SUPPORT
  214.  
  215. In December, 1990, the European Computer Manufacturer's Association
  216. (ECMA) adopted a new standard known as Portable Common Tools
  217. Environment (PCTE).  In order to support current efforts to evolve to
  218. that standard, Digital and GIE-Emeraude, a French consortium, have
  219. worked together to provide GIE-Emeraude's implementation of PCTE V12 to
  220. DECsystem and DECstation platforms.  This product is now available and
  221. will be distributed and supported by GIE-Emeraude and its distributors
  222. worldwide.

  224. This agreement with GIE-Emeraude is another step in the continuing
  225. effort to maintain COHESION's support of industry standards.  As the
  226. ECMA/PCTE standard evolves over the next few years, Digital will
  227. support PCTE concepts and interfaces.  Digital has played a significant
  228. role in the shaping of the PCTE standards, and will continue to do so
  229. in the future.

  231. OPEN SERVICES SET THE STAGE FOR CASE IMPLEMENTATION
  232.  
  233. In addition to the full portfolio already available including DECstart
  234. for CDD and DECset, Digital today announced additional services and
  235. enhancements:

  237. COHESION Integrated On-line Training--Enables software professionals to
  238. rapidly gain full and immediate use of the capabilities available in
  239. Digital's COHESION tools.  COHESION Integrated On-line training is
  240. included in DECdesign on VMS and in DECplan and DECset on both VMS and
  241. ULTRIX platforms.

  243. Understanding CASE for System Development, Engineering & Embedded
  244. Systems--A modular, self-paced video series designed to help assess
  245. software development practice and understand how to best plan and
  246. position a CASE implementation strategy.  This new version includes a
  247. software engineering assessment questionnaire, a special video module
  248. on the assessment process, and a "grading template."

  252. Service Tools for DECtp--offering easy-to-use, repeatable, custom-fit
  253. solutions to support large commercial application design and
  254. development.  Available in June, 1991.  Pricing in combination with the
  255. basic service option which includes installation and start-up training.
